We All Scream for Ice Cream

You may recall from our summer 2012 bucket list, that I was hoping to making to make homemade ice cream at some point last summer. I had my eye on a particular ice cream maker that was going to help me do this. We had other financial priorities that took precedence, like our summer vacation, and funds just didn’t allow for this expense. So I made do with 1-minute berry ice cream, and smoothie recipes that didn’t require an ice cream maker to get our cool treat fix. Once the summer months passed, I quit nagging Greg about getting it for me I put it on the back burner of my mind, at least for the time being, until summer 2013 came around.

Well Christmas morning came and what to my wondering eyes did appear, but a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer; with a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be Saint Nick and I spotted a gift in the corner with wrapping paper I did not recognize, and one I knew Mrs. Claus did not wrap or remembering seeing. It was then that it hit me that Greg had again succeeded at making me look like a schmuck on Christmas :). Each year we say we’re just going to get gifts for the kids and not get each other anything. Then every year he gets me something anyway and I’m left standing there with my lovely gift in hand, looking at him like well…sorry, I kept my word, I really didn’t get you anything- Merry Christmas! You would think I would learn.

Excuse me, I digress, back to the mystery gift. I tore off the wrapping paper, trying to play it cool and hide the fact that I loved that he got me a gift anyway, and was seriously shocked when I saw the ice cream maker I had been wanting so badly sitting there on the floor. I asked him how he remembered which one I wanted and he responded, “Well that was easy. I still had the email you sent me last summer, with a link to the ice cream maker and the subject being; Can I Have This.” I’m glad to know my annoying ways proved to be helpful :).

It took less than 48 hours for me to get ingredients and get my first batch of ice cream going. For the first batch I made a simple vanilla recipe and it was just magnificent. I imagine my reaction to seeing that I had made ice cream was similar to Tom Hanks, when he made fire on Cast Away. It is quite cool and seriously so good!

The second batch of ice cream I made was for Kit-Kat ice cream. There are no words. It didn’t survive 24 hours in this house.

SONY DSCThe boys have loved watching my liquid concoctions turn into ice cream and they have really enjoyed eating the fruits of my labor. I am going to continue to experiment with recipes this winter, but it is really going to be on this summer. The next thing I am going to try to tackle is sorbet. Expect to see many recipes of the frozen variety in the future! :)

Cool!! What kind of ice cream maker was it?? I’ve been wanting one too but Jason keeps rolling his eyes and naming all the gadgets I don’t use…:)

Suzy, it is this ice cream maker; http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-ICE-30BC-Indulgence-2-Quart-Automatic/dp/B0006ONQOC/ref=sr_1_4?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285554658&sr=8-4. It is SO easy to use and it’s cool because the kids can stand over it and watch it turn from a liquid to a solid. Greg had the same comments (how often would I use it) but after the first bite of ice cream he said it was worth it :).

Looks delicious! Kit Kats have always been my favorite candy bar and I LOVE ice cream, so can’t lose here!

Thanks, Nicole! You’re right, you can never lose with Kit Kats and ice cream :)!
